June 2010

New beginner Pole Fit course begins at the Lido

Two new beginner Pole Fit courses start at the Lido on Thurs 2nd June (from 6:15-7:45pm) and Fri 3rd June (from 8pm-9.30pm) taught by Beccie Savidge. The course runs for 6 weeks. Course cost is £120 for the six weeks and each lesson will last for 90 minutes. Pole Fit is an exercise and dance class incorporating the use of a pole. It improves flexibility, muscle tone and general fitness.

There will be 8 poles set up, with a maximum of 12 students in each class. This means that each student will be spending a minimum of 45 minutes on a pole (which we're told is exhausting!). Beccie will teach you how to climb, spin, and spin links - in various styles to suit all tastes.

Each class will feature an hour on the pole and the last 30 minutes doing a dynamic and calorie bashing stretching routine. The aim of the routine is to deeply improve your posture, your flexibility to prevent sporting injuries, and to get you down towards the splits ... great for a summer party trick!

There are few places left on the Thursday and Friday slots, so if the dates and times suit you and you would like to first try out pole dancing (a taster for free) please feel to contact Beccie on 07908 122855. There should also be a second set of 6 week classes after the first, starting in July. Tasters are currently at Beccie's premises in Herne Hill, but hopefully will be moving to the Lido soon. You can also find signup sheets for tasters in the Lido lobby.

August 2010

Hat Fitz & Cara Robinson at The Alma Friday 6th August. From 8.30pm Image:Http://www.thealmapub.com/uploads/2/6/2/0/2620232/5206846.jpg What a combination!

One of Australia’s festival favourites and perennial showstopper Hat Fitz is now joined on stage by Northern Ireland’s critically acclaimed vocalist extraordinaire and multi instrumentalist Cara Robinson on drums, washboard, flute and tin whistle.

Recent performances overseas saw the duo play a total of 81 shows including some of the world’s most prestigious festivals across England, Ireland, France and Scotland to packed houses and rave reviews.

The blending of pre war hill country and delta blues with traditional celtic and early Australian folk has produced a truly unique musical style that’s seen audiences world wide drift off into the early morning, often drenched with sweat and always covered in smiles.

Sometimes referred to as “Queensland blooze with a twist” you’ll soon appreciate what all the fuss is about.

It’s raw, raucous and relevant.

Production of Trainspotting at the South London Theatre

South London Theatre, 2A Norwood High St, London SE27 9NS 020 8670 4661 Tuesday 16th November - Saturday 20th November (8-10pm)

Trailer: [8]

Irvine Welsh's seminal novel, published in 1993, makes references to many aspects of contemporary socio-political issues, such as the Troubles in Northern Ireland, and popular culture including numerous bands and musicians, whom the characters idolize, especially Iggy Pop. Seventeen years later, the Troubles have been brought to an uneasy end and the idol of punk is selling car insurance. Nevertheless, the issues raised in Trainspotting continue to be relevant today since drug abuse is still rife and quasi justified as an act of rebellion against a capitalist society that traps and enslaves presenting opportunity only for the privileged few.
