Berridge Road is in Gipsy Hill. The main entrance to the road is from Bristow Road but it can also be reached from Salters Hill via Kingston Square or Antigua Close and from St Kitts Terrace via Georgetown Close. Montserrat Close is near the end of the road just opposite the green.
Brian Pickerden's position in the VE photograph is slightly right of centre in the second row back next to the child being held. In the VJ photograph he is on the extreme right of the front line directly above the black and white dog. His recollection of the parties was the camaraderie of the people during these times especially the women. The mums of this era put their all into making these street parties a success. The monies came from the community on a weekly collection even though they were having to manage from very little income. During the party there were games organised and a bar of chocolate was the prize.
On the VE photo the text says "Victory Souvenir - Our "VE" Party 1945 - Photo: Stickells, 21 St Faith's Road SE21". Virtual Norwood made an appeal for information about the photographer. We now know the photographer was Frederick Stickells. His grandson, Tony Stickells was researching his family tree and came across Virtual Norwood. He let us know that he worked as a photographer for many years but sadly has since passed away. Tony was very pleased to see his grandfathers work on display.
